New Zealand Success

Rongxin Huiko Electric Co.,Ltd (RXHK) have been awarded another contract to support the integration of wind power into the transmission grid, this time in New Zealand which represents a first for RXHK in that country.

In September 2021 Vestas awarded a contract to RXHK for a MaxiVar technology STATCOM for the southern section of Mercury’s Turitea Wind Farm located near the city of Palmerston North in New Zealand’s North Island. The project will be delivered using a combination of our local and offshore teams working in close collaboration with all parties.

Once constructed the southern section of the wind farm will add 103MW to the existing 119MW capacity of the northern section of the wind farm, with 222MW in total, what will be New Zealand’s largest wind farm.  The RXHK design and supply contract is for a containerised ±55Mvar MaxiVar STATCOM directly connecting at 33kV. This solution provides a number of key benefits including its significantly more compact footprint than other switched or dynamic solutions.

The high speed RXHK controller for this unit will interface with the power park controller being delivered by Vestas as part of their construction of the wind farm.  Joint hardware integration testing is being planned between RXHK and Vestas at an offsite location to ensure smooth integration at site.

As with previous projects in Australia, UK and other territories RXHK will provide power system dynamic simulation models of the STATCOM that allow the grid code performance to be demonstrated to be in compliance with the latest grid connection rules. The control systems will be further tested utilising RXHK’s in-house RTDS system as part of the factory acceptance testing for the project.

This latest award confirms the local market confidence in RXHK technology and confirms our ability to supply to demanding New Zealand Standards.  Even with the recent challenges of Covid-19 RXHK has continued to deliver our projects without delay through adoption of safe working methods, modern communications and the use of remote supervision and commissioning of this technology.

RXHK looks forward to supporting all parties with this project in the rapid delivery period, as well as the option to provide long-term service and maintenance support.
