RXHK awarded contract for HVDC converter valves and auxiliary equipment for Baihetan-Jiangsu UHVDC Transmission Project


In mid-December 2020 RXHK was the lowest bidder for Package 4 of the Baihetan-Jiangsu ±800kV UHVDC Transmission Project. The IGBT converter valve equipment is to be installed in the Changshu Converter Station of the SGCC Baihetan-Jiangsu UHV Project. The scope is 1 set of ±400kV/1000MW HVDC converter valves, water cooling system and other equipment, and the delivery is expected to be completed by the end of 2021.

The Baihetan-Jiangsu UHV Project is the key project of China's "West-East Electricity Transmission Project" strategy. It starts at the Butuo converter station in Liangshan Prefecture, Sichuan, ends at the Changshu converter station in Jiangsu, and passes through 5 provinces, 19 cities, 59 districts and counties, the project has a maximum transmission capacity of 8 million kilowatts.

The project uses UHV LCC and UHV VSC-HVDC technology, and applies controllable self-recovery energy dissipation devices that deliver millisecond-level energy balancing. The hybrid UHVDC link allows a dependent grid to quickly switch to a supporting grid. Crucially this project alleviates the voltage stability risk caused by the reduction of thermal power units in the East China Power Grid, and greatly improves the power receiving capacity of the East China Power Grid.

After completion the Baihetan-Jiangsu UHV Project will add an energy artery that traverses China’s territory. It will have a significant impact in optimizing energy allocation, ensuring power supply, stimulating economic growth, promoting green development, and supporting technological innovation.

This is the seventh HVDC contract awarded to RXHK and was won against stiff competition.
